Y2mate Alternative (and Is Y2mate Safe?) in 2026
Quick answer: The original Y2mate.com was shut down in October 2025. Its operator agreed to close it and 11 related sites after enforcement action by IFPI, the recording industry body (IFPI). The "Y2mate" sites you find today are separate look-alikes, and security sites warn about their pop-ups, redirects and fake download buttons. If you've been typing "y2mate" into your browser for years, you've probably noticed it doesn't behave the way it used to. Here's what changed, what's actually behind the Y2mate name now, and what to use instead.
What happened to Y2mate?
On 14 October 2025, IFPI announced that Y2mate.com and 11 other stream-ripping sites had been closed for good. According to IFPI (announcement):
- The sites shared one operator, who agreed to shut them down permanently after targeted enforcement action in Vietnam.
- Together they had received more than 620 million visits in the previous 12 months.
- Most of the domains are now in IFPI's possession, including Y2mate.com, Y2mate.gg, Yt1s.com, Utomp3.com and Tomp3.cc.
- Before the shutdown, Y2mate had already been blocked in 13 countries.
After the takedown, Y2mate.com showed IFPI's logo and the message "This site has been shutdown for copyright infringement" (Digital Music News). When we checked on 10 October 2026, Y2mate.gg still showed the same IFPI notice.
Is Y2mate still working?
The original isn't. Plenty of sites still use the name, on domains like y2mate.is, y2mate.nu and many others. They aren't the original service, and you usually can't tell who runs them. They can change, move or vanish without notice.
You can see it in how they behave. When we opened y2mate.is on 10 October 2026, it redirected twice and ended up on a different domain, en.y2mate.sx. MalwareTips recorded the same redirect in its scan of the site (MalwareTips). Some of these sites still convert videos. But each one is its own operation, so a good experience on one tells you nothing about the next.
Is Y2mate safe?
Not reliably. The download tool itself usually isn't the problem. The problem is the advertising around it. Security sites that have looked at Y2mate and its copies describe the same patterns:
- Notification prompts. PCrisk notes that Y2mate asks for permission to show notifications, and that allowing it leads to unrelated pop-up ads that open untrustworthy sites (PCrisk).
- Ads that lead to unwanted software. PCrisk also says its ads can open dubious pages or run scripts that install potentially unwanted apps (PCrisk).
- Fake download buttons and pop-ups. Comparitech warns about intrusive pop-ups and deceptive download buttons, and about browser hijackers that change your homepage or search engine (Comparitech).
- Redirects to other domains, like the y2mate.is to y2mate.sx hop above (MalwareTips).
To be fair, the risk isn't the same everywhere. Automated scans of some Y2mate domains come back clean or nearly clean, and PCrisk itself says the original y2mate.com wasn't a malicious website in itself (PCrisk). The risk comes from the ad networks these sites rely on to make money, and from clicking the wrong one of several "Download" buttons.
If you've already used a Y2mate site
- Block its notifications. In Chrome, go to Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Notifications and remove any Y2mate-type sites you've allowed.
- Check your extensions and apps. Remove anything you don't remember installing.
- Run a scan with your antivirus or anti-malware tool.
- Don't install anything a download site offers you. A web downloader never needs you to install software.
What's a safe Y2mate alternative?
Look for a downloader that does one thing and doesn't pay for itself with aggressive ads: one link field, one download button, no notification prompt, nothing to install.

- Copy the video link from your browser's address bar, or tap Share → Copy link in the YouTube app.
- Paste it into the YouTube video downloader and click Get download options.
